While it’s important to focus on what is now taking place in Israel in view of prophecies recorded in Scripture, equally important—if not even more—is paying attention to the role of the Church in the Last Days—and what she is required to do in order for the end to come.
The Lord commands us preach the gospel of the kingdom to EVERY nation, EVERY tribe, EVERY people, and EVERY language, and to make disciples of ALL of them before the end can come. Therefore, regardless of how many exciting prophecies have been fulfilled, the Messiah will not return until the Church has fulfilled the Great Commission.
This is where we have fallen short. The resources the Lord has entrusted to us are primarily directed to building ourselves up, growing our churches, and ministering to needy persons in our midst. As worthy as these endeavors are, they do not “move the needle” in terms of fulfilling the Great Commission and hastening the return of the Messiah. Church ministries and activities today take place nearly entirely in regions which are already “reached” in missiological terms—in regions where there already is a viable witness for Christ—as in the presence of local churches and disciples, whether in the West or even in major cities in the Third World like New Delhi or Jakarta—where there are already many churches.
We are certainly not saying that we should stop reaching out to the spiritually and physically needy in our midst. But we are saying that during these Last Days we should devote at least equal attention to “moving the needle.” There are thousands of unreached people groups in the world where the people live in both physical and spiritual darkness—many living in abject poverty with no earthly hope and relying on false gods who offer no heavenly hope after this life is over. They have never heard the gospel of Jesus Christ since there are no witnesses living in their midst. There is no chance they will hear the gospel of life unless a worker is sent to them. Missiologists tell us there are between 3,000 and 7,000 such people groups around the world. Jesus Christ assures us that the end will NOT come until they have ALL been reached.
Unless by faith we direct our thoughts and attention to them—and not just to those needy ones around us—we will not move the needle with regard to the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. It will definitely take great faith apart from sight to reach out to those dwelling invisibly to us at the ends of the earth whose lives, language, and culture are totally foreign to us and to whom we cannot at all relate. It will take VISION. It will take FAITH.
Sending out a handful of expatriate missionaries each year will not move the needle much. Rather, radical action is required if we indeed believe that we are in the Last Days. Missions as recorded in Acts (and even greater) must be restored to missions today for the needle to move appreciably during these Last Days when the remaining time is short. And it must take place through local harvest workers for whom there will be no barriers due to culture, language, or living conditions. They can be trained quickly and sent far more cheaply than an expat missionary. The job of the expat will essentially be training the local workers and then sending them to reach the unreached.
