"This
year was my first time to spend Christmas in the Philippines. There
is no snow on the ground and very few Christmas decorations
but the Filipino people have the Christmas spirit none the less.
They celebrate a unique custom called Noche Buena. Everyone stays
awake on the night of Christmas eve until about 3am Christmas morning.
After midnight they share a large meal together and open their presents.
In areas where fireworks are permitted they set off enough explosives
to rival a New Years celebration.
However some people take that explosive tradition to a new level.
The day after Christmas my friend and I were eating lunch at a local
Chow King, a fast food chain here in the Philippines. We ate and
left with no problems, but not long after that the streets were filled
with armed soldiers securing important buildings and redirecting
traffic around a certain part of the city. It seems that only a few
hours after I ate at Chow King a bomb was discovered inside. Fortunately
the bomb was defused and no one was injured.
The
life of a missionary is one of endless adventures. Yesterday I
had the privilege of speaking at a church anniversary.
I took a
one hour bus trip to a small village and from there rode a motorbike
several miles into the mountains. The bikes could not take us the
entire way so we had to hike up several hills and across a hanging
bridge to get to the church. I shared a message about living victoriously
and held a call for salvation. Four elderly people responded and
gave their lives to Christ! After that I held a call for healing.
About 15 people responded and after rebuking the infirmity all of
them were healed! Body pains were healed, a young girl’s cyst
disappeared and an old woman’s eyesight was completely restored!"
Luke 10:9 "Heal
the sick who are there and tell them,
'The kingdom of God is near you.’"
