“Worse than the coronavirus, people are now suffering from hunger affecting the suddenly jobless laborers and their families all over India. In Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and other major cities, many people used to live paycheck to paycheck doing manual labor. They came from the states of Orissa, Bihar, Chattisgarh and also from Uttar Pradesh. After the lockdown they and their families have no place to stay and no food to eat, forcing them with their belongings and children to trudge back to their home villages—often far away. Since public transportation was also shutdown suddenly with no prior warning, they and their families must now go home on foot. It’s a humanitarian nightmare.”
